Why Overwork and Overwhelm Are Killing Your Productivity and Profit — And How to Fix It
Many years ago, while running my handmade business, GogoBags, I learned a valuable lesson I’ve kept in mind ever since.
Here’s what happened: like any entrepreneur, I was juggling three different projects simultaneously. I was working with a sales and marketing coach to grow my sales, collaborating with a brand expert to rebrand my business for upscale stores, and engaging a product photographer to update my product photos on my website. My routine was filled with work every waking moment; I filled every open slot in my schedule with tasks or learning about running a business.
During this hectic period, my business coach advised me to step away from all my projects during an upcoming camping trip and give my brain a break. This simple action ultimately saved me $2,000.
By resting and allowing my mind the space it needed, I realized the scheduled product photos would quickly become outdated due to my ongoing rebrand. That brief pause saved me a significant amount of money and only cost me a few days of rest and an adult colouring book. Let’s face it: I find it hard to sit still and do nothing.
The moral of the story is clear: our brains need time to process all the information we gather to use it effectively. We often know what we need to do; if we feel unsure about what to prioritize or lack the motivation to act, it’s usually because we haven’t paused to give our minds the quiet time needed to connect the dots.
It's Okay to Pause
When we pause, our brain organizes the information into the right compartments, allowing us to make the best decisions possible. So here’s your permission to pause. If you won’t do it for your mental health, do it for your business growth, productivity, and profit.
This is exactly how I guide my website clients to determine their website’s main goals, copy, and images. I give them fun homework: to print out our website builder workbook and take it on a nature walk. In the workbook, there are instructions to pause, enjoy a quiet walk, doodle, and answer brainstorming questions.
They may not realize it—and it may not feel like work—but business owners know their businesses better than anyone. The workbook includes a creative playlist and affirmations designed to enhance the process, making it more enjoyable and effective. By the end of this fun, reflective exercise, they have a clear blueprint for their website.
So if you are looking for permission I give you permission to pause and slow down.
